Utopia Chamber Choir’s summer concert in the cozy Mediæval church of Pernaja, Finland, takes you from darkness to light, from pain to pleasure. The first half of this programme consisting of Renaissance polyphony, magnificent works of William Byrd and John Dowland represent the sombre era of COVID-19 and the musicians’ anxiety due to the inability to perform. In the latter half we abandon the gloominess and head towards light, joy, hope and the future, culminating with Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Te Deum. Throughout history, the Te Deum hymn has accompanied the end of hard times and shattering catastrophes. Can we now conclude the Corona pandemic and step from darkness into light?
