In this concert, Andrew Lawrence-King and Utopia Chamber Choir release a CD consisting of Piæ Cantiones melodies in completely new and interesting arrangements. Although the collection of songs known as ”Piæ Cantiones” is from 16th century Turku, Finland, most of its tunes are familiar around the world, particularly as Christmas carols in the Anglosphere.
A great part of the songs were ancient already in the 16th century; this has inspired us to perform them in a Mediæval manner with polyphonic improvisation and accompanying instruments.
The result offers quite novel and fascinating soundscapes into this well-beloved music.
The CD will be released by Alia Vox, the label of Jordi Savall, world-renowned master of ancient music. Until now, they have only released Savall’s own performances. This new CD is the one of the first third-party recording in Alia Vox’s catalogue.
