Gesualdo – genius and murderer

Prince. Composer. Murderer.

Carlo Gesualdo (1566–1613) is one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in the history of music. His compositions break the rules of Renaissance music with dazzling boldness – full of beauty, dissonance and restless tension. His life is overshadowed by an act that made him a legend in his own time.

Chamber Choir Utopia’s musical theatre work takes the listener to the world of Gesualdo, where nothing is unambiguous. During the evening, Gesualdo’s madrigals and sacred music are intertwined with the composer’s own story, as we imagine his voice – before the murder, in the heat of the moment, and afterwards.

Actor Ilkka Villi gives voice to Gesualdo’s inner turmoil, the Chamber Choir Utopia, conducted by Mikael Maasalo, brings to life his unique madrigals and sacred music, and Pilvi Listo-Tervaportti’s organ deepens the atmosphere of the concert experience. The understated stage, candlelight and carefully constructed silence create a space where music and story merge into one experience.

This is not just a concert.

This is an experience that will stay with you.
